Kool & The Gang – Cherish (letra en inglés y traducción en español)

 

Es increíble como la mayor parte de la gente no es consciente de lo efímero de nuestra existencia, de que eso de memento mori no es sólo algo que hay que decir a l@s poderos@s cuando alcanzan la cima, sino que es algo que todo el mundo nos tenemos que aplicar porque nuestra existencia terrenal tiene un final. Por eso hay que hacer ver a toda la gente que queremos que de verdad apreciamos el amor y el cariño que nos profesan tal y como nos dice la canción, porque es un regalo maravilloso que por cualquier fatalidad puede verse interrumpido, y mientras se pueda hay que agradecerlo y disfrutarlo.

 

Kool & The Gang (a los que hemos tenido en estas entradas) se forma en New Jersey en 1964 por el bajista Robert "Kool" Bell el saxofonista Ronald Bell, el baterista George Brown, el trompetista Robert Mickens el guitarrista Claydes Charles Smith, el trombonista Clifford Adams y el teclista Rick Westfield. Su primer disco, Kool and the Gang de 1969, fue instrumental mezlando jazz, soul, funk, rock y música pop, en el segundo y en el tercero empiezan a introducir voces, pero será en el cuarto, Wild And Peaceful de 1974, cuando alcancen el éxito con los sencillos Jungle Boogie y Hollywood Swinging. En los siguiente años sacan más de un álbum anual, Light Of Worlds, Spirit Of The Boogie, Love & Understanding, Open Sesame, The Force, Everybody's Dancin' que suponen un progresivo declive en ventas y aceptación así que en 1979 deciden dar un cambio y contratan el productor brasileño Eumir Deodato e incorporación del cantante James J.T. Taylor a la alineación dando como resultado Ladies' Night que tendrá dos temazos como Ladies' Night y Too Hot. Un año más tarde ve la luz su LP más conocido Celebrate! que con su único número uno Celebration. En 1981 repiten éxito con Get Down On It de su disco Something Special, como dos años después con Joanna de In The Heart. Su último gran disco será Emergency de 1984 donde está la sensacional Fresh y esta archiconocida Cherish. Desde entonces las salidas y entradas en el grupo han sido continuas y no han vuelto a tener el éxito de entonces, pero no por ello han dejado de actuar.

 

La letra es una reflexión sobre cómo debemos apreciar los momentos de felicidad que se tienen porque son maravillosos y pueden terminar de la forma más insospechada

La música arranca con un ritmo melancólico y dulzón de teclados al que se unen el bajo, la percusión y la guitarra que da paso a la voz aguda y cantarina del vocalista que es apoyado por los coros casi en falsete de toda la banda en los estribillos.
